If you are the adventurous type and have plenty of time, arrive in the same way as Alexandra the Great did when he came to visit the Oracle in March 331, by camel. The full journey from Marsa Matrouh takes up to 12 days and is not worth doing as the terrain is fairly monotonous, but we can arrange to meet you 50k or so out of Siwa and you could do one or two days of camel trekking down into the oasis through the mountain ways, similar to Gilf Kebir, and arrive in style the way people have done for thousands of years. You would be the talk of the town as no one does this any more and you would fully appreciated the feeling of what it is like to finally arrive in a true oasis.

There is a an Egyptian who has several camels in Siwa who can do the trek for you and we can provide the tents and cooking equipment that you would need each night. It’s not cheap and we need a lot of advance warning, but it’s well worth it.

Bahariya Oasis is 420 kilometres across the desert towards Cairo. It is a mere three hours to Cairo from Bahariya oasis and so a real alternative to going back to Cairo a different way. There is no real road between Siwa and Bahariya Oasis yet so it’s only possible by 4 wheel drive. It’s a long drive but is done in one day stopping for lunch in one of the abandoned oasis along the way. If you would like to arrange this trip let us know as we know the best (safe) drivers and the market prices that vary from season to season.
