Ocna Sugatag

Ocna Sugatag

Ocna Sugatage was once a major town in Maramures as the main interest in the area in the middle ages was the salt mines here. In the communist years after the salt mines had collapsed and flooded with water, the town became known to Union leaders and communist loyal’s based in Baia Mare and Sighetu as a place to go and soak in the salt pools. After the revolution it faded into no where but due to the rise in the standards of living in Maramures it is once again becoming a low key tourist destination for families from Maramures.

This means, when your kids or you want to go for a swim when it all gets a bit too hot, we now have a choice of fresh water and salt water pools to go swimming in. There is one holiday complex here that has it all, a large fresh water pool you can swim in along with salt pools and hot jacuzzi to dunk your body in and float around in the highly salty water. The town is around 15 minutes drive from Bred and 7 kilometers away. There are a few old fashioned bars that are best left alone after dark and two good ABC shops that sell all kinds of food and what ever you need. Our friends run a bar and restaurant on the big lake on the edge of town. They have some paddle boats and great beer on draught and if your lucky… you’ll meet the Pup singer, Romanian style. You can come here for dinner and stay all evening, the atmosphere here is very different from the men only bars in town with a relaxed family feel.
