Siwa Oasis & Transylvania - Somewhere Different

Somewhere Different is about experiencing the huge dunes of the Sahara Desert in Siwa Oasis, the culture of the Berber and Bedouin tribes mixed in with the luxury of your own private villa where you can relax and enjoy a G&T around the fire on the roof terrace in the evenings.

From the beginning of June 2011, you will be able to jump into a time machine and experience the last remaining peasant culture in Europe in our new destination in Transylvania in the small village of Breb way up in the carpathian mountains in the county of Maramures. Have a look at the villa we have finished restoring and the new Transylvania tours we are now running there or book the villa direct here.

We are a small family run business who opted out of the rat race in 2004 and have never looked back. If you would like to have a taste of the 'no going back' life and experience living in a primitive culture that has not changed for centuries - then have a look through our web site to get a feel for Siwa Oasis and our little village in Transylvania and send us an email with your questions, and we'll see you there.

siwa old town

The Siwa Villa is situated in the old town a 100 meters from the Shali Fort. The villa is the mud house in the picture to the left with the three arched windows to the left. The community surrounding the villa is quite apart from the odd donkey and the call to prayer but is only 5 minutes from the souk and restaurants in town.

You can book the Siwa Villa directly or experience Siwa Oasis though our All inclusive holidays or design your own desert tour to Siwa Oasis. Either way we will arrange everything for you allowing you to relax on your holiday at the same time as taking in a very different way of life and some breath taking scenery out in the desert.

Experience a tribal culture that makes you reflect on your own

The Siwa Villa in the old Shali fort (on the left with the three arched windows).

Most houses in Siwa are made of mud due to the fact that it never rains here. The thick walls act as great insulators from the summer heat and cool winter evenings. Have a look at the Siwa Villa section to see picture of the villa from inside and out and some ideas on what you can do to relax when staying there.

Jack the donkey is always on stand by to take you out around the gardens of Siwa and the many roman springs dotted around the oasis for you to swim in.

Jack takes 5 times longer than going by jeep. Your not in a hurry, your on holiday - when was the last time you spent the afternoon cruising in the back of donkey cart watching the world go by?

siwa tombs

There are many places to visit on a day out from the villa, the Great Sand Sea, the abandoned oasis's between Siwa and Baharyia, the salt lakes for swimming and the tombs for exploring and understanding how life was here 3,000 years ago. Al Quara is an oasis 150kms from Siwa that we sometimes visit with guests, it is like Siwa but 50 years ago and very very basic.

You will discover things in Siwa that will stay with you for ever. It's the little things, the moments you least expect are what our guests mention when leaving.

We have several references on trip advisor written by our guests who have stayed with us over the years. Have a look at what they have to say about us and Siwa in general.

We restored the villa with our bare hands. I picked the stone in the bathroom myself, it was just an idea. I like it when ideas come together.

tombs western desert

There are tombs all around Siwa, some Roman, some Pharonic. It's the fact that there is no one else for miles around that makes it all the more interesting.

There are not quest for tickets in the desert, just you and feeling that a lot has gone on here before. Exactly who and why still remains a mystery as there is very little written history on Siwa. Written in Siwa. Most is documented from Greece and other parts of Egypt.

Lazy days exploring tombs out in the desert...

After your day out in the desert, to retire to the roof terrace to watch the light change over the old Shali fort is a favorite pass time for many guests. As they say, time wasted and enjoyed, is time well spent.

We can organise a lamb to be roasted on the roof if you want a feast or have a birthday to celebrate. It takes all day and how shall we say, the meat is as fresh as it gets. The lamb is stuffed and tided onto the split at Fathi's father in laws house. This tends to be a boy trip to sort this out. There is enough food to feed a small party... so, well any excuse and we'll organise one.

one of three lakes in siwa oasis

We have 60 fedans ( acres ) of land out on the edge of the desert if you want to camp out or bring a large group of scouts or a school to camp and be able to walk directly into the Great Sand Sea without the need of hiring a jeep.

360 degrees of total quite. The only noise is the ringing in your ears.

Siwa Oasis is on the edge of the Great Sand Sea in the Sahara Desert

We live in a Siwan garden on the edge of the Sahara Desert which has a swimming pool and camp area amongst the olive trees for you to use at any time. In the summer months this is a great place to come and spend the day to swim all day without worrying about what your wearing.

Have a look around our web site and our All inclusive Holidays to Egypt and get a feel for a trip to Siwa and we're hopefully meet you soon :)
